Georges Braque (1882-1963) was a French Fauvist painter who began to rethink his painting style after admiring Picasso’s Les Demoiselles. Using the revolutionary elements of the painting as a starting point, Braque and Picasso together invented Cubism around 1908, believing that the art of painting should go far beyond the representation of visual reality. Most scholars call the first phase of Cubism, developed collaboratively by Picasso and Braque, Analytical Cubism, because it is essentially a pictorial study of the structure of form.
